As Portadown College students received their A level results at the close of what has been a unique and difficult year for our young people, parents and teachers alike, Principal Gillian Gibb paid sincere tribute to the class of 2020: “On behalf of the College community, I wish to place on record our pride in the personal achievements of our Year 14 leavers. It is pleasing that the talents and abilities of so many of our students have been rewarded in the excellent grades secured after a most unprecedented time for education in PC’s history.
The College is also very mindful of some concerns about a number of anomalies as a result of the Awarding Bodies’ standardisation processes by which particular grades were adjusted to below what would have been expected. The College staff are working hard to support and act on the behalf of students in this unfortunate position.
The class of 2020 will be fondly remembered for their distinctive resilience and dedication in what have been the most challenging of circumstances. Their work ethic, adaptability and generosity of spirit are exemplary. We are delighted to know that the overwhelming majority of our A level students secured their chosen university pathways.
On behalf of the Governors and staff, I extend warmest wishes to our Year 14 leavers as they embark upon the next chapter of their lives. They are wonderful ambassadors for the College and will make their significant and enriching mark on the world in the years ahead.
I also wish to acknowledge my admiration for our Year 13 students who received AS grades this August. Again, in uncertain and unsettling circumstances, this cohort has risen to the many challenges of the last months. They should be proud of their personal achievements and encouraged by the opportunities for success that await them as they progress to Year 14 for completion of A level studies with us here in PC.
I also commend the unstinting efforts of our College staff, parents and carers who have supported our young people so admirably throughout their studies at Portadown College. As PC prepares for the beginning of a new academic year, I look forward to strengthening these existing partnerships across the College community.”
