The specification helps students understand the connections between local, national and global issues. They develop confidence in thinking independently by critically challenging accepted views and assumptions. They also make informed decisions and take appropriate action.

Students also have opportunities to develop transferable skills such as creative thinking, analytical problem solving and effective teamwork.

The CCEA Learning for Life and Work specification encourages pupils to:

  • develop the skills required to think independently, make informed decisions and take appropriate courses of action in relation to personal, social, economic and employment issues;
  • develop a deeper understanding of the impact of change on individuals, society and the economy; • develop a deeper understanding of the connections between local, national and global issues; • develop higher-order critical and creative thinking skills;
  • develop their ability to work effectively with others;
  • develop the knowledge, understanding, skills and confidence to critically challenge accepted views and assumptions;
  • develop a critical and analytical approach to problem solving and decision making; and
  • develop their knowledge, understanding and skills, and progress to further or higher education and employment.

There are three written exams in Learning for Life and Work, and an investigative Controlled Assessment Task.

The specification has four units:

Unit 4: Controlled Assessment Task (Investigation)Controlled assessment 100 marks Students complete one task from a choice of three.

The task is an investigation on a topic in one of the following:

1. Local and Global Citizenship;
2. Personal Development; or
3. Employability. The task involves the following:

• Part A: Planning;

• Part B: Research;

• Part C: Communicating Findings;

• Part D: Self-Evaluation; and

• Part E: Presentation of Task.

Teachers mark the task, and CCEA moderate the results.

A Level is unavailable in this subject. Other related subjects to study at A Level would include Geography, History, Health & Social Care, Politics and Business Studies.

Learning for Life and Work provides a good foundation for careers in business, finance, marketing, human resources and research, to name a few.
